Vice President John C.
Breckinridge Autograph Letter Signed regarding a Gift of a Dressing
Gown, one page, 7 3/4" x 9 3/4", Washington City Jan. 5 1859,
to J. Hanson Thomas Baltimore, MD. Letter reads in full,
"My Dear Sir, Accept my cordial thanks for the
dressing gown you sent me the other day. I had forgotten our
conversation on taste in the matter of gowns, with reminisce of it
by the reception of your present-which fits well, and is so superior
to the other, that "Old Red" is now thrown aside with contempt.
Come to Washington some evening-Stevenson, Clay and myself are
keeping house together, and will welcome you at any time.
Yours very Truly, John C. Breckinridge". Letter written on
lined paper with Federal shield stamp in upper left corner.
