an envelope postmarked 2/1/1870 only a few months before his death.
Lee answers a letter from one Henry L. Smith of Norristown, PA
asking about the prospects in Virginia and states his
qualifications. Lee writes "Henry L. Smith, referred to Mr. Chas A. Davidson
for such answer as he may please to give R. E. Lee". The Lee
signature is dark and bold.
Conservation framed with a period engraving and Smith's letter so
that both sides can be seen.
