Autograph Letter Signed, 7.75" x 9.75", while serving as an official
appointee during the Presidential term of Ulysses S. Grant,
reporting on an estimate for an engineering project to the Louisiana
State Auditor.
"New Orleans, La., Nov. 25th 1873. Chas. Clinton, Esqr.,
State Auditor. Sir, I have your favor of the 8th inst[ant].
In reply I have to say that upon a complete examination of the
report of the Commission of Engineers, I find that our total of
cubic yards in our formed estimate may with great risk be reduced to
730,000; and I shall take pleasure in so recommending when our
Commission meets on Monday the 1st Proximo. If the Commission
agrees upon this estimate, or this reduction of our estimate it will
be duly reported to you, in detail, as soon as the Commission votes.
I am Very Respectfully Your Ob[edien]t Serv[an]t, James Longstreet,
Com[missione]r for the State."
