Andrew Johnson
Document Signed
Rare document signed as President dated 5/7/1865
only a few weeks after the Lincoln Assassination. The document
is a military appointment promoting P. E. O'Connor to the rank of
First Lieutenant in the Veteran Reserve Corps from the date of
12/3/1864. As the document is also signed by E. D. Townsend
attesting that this promotion was recorded in the Adjutant Generals
office 3/7/1865 this was obviously ordered during the Lincoln
Administration but Lincoln didn't live to sign the promotion.
Also signed by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War.
As most collectors know, most Johnson Military
Appointments were signed with a stamped signature. This is one
of a small percentage that were hand signed by Johnson in the first
two months of his administration.
Some folds and wrinkles as are common with vellum
documents with an extremely strong Johnson signature.
Conservation framed with period engraving.
