written only days before Gettysburg
Gen. Barlett's letter is written from Head Qtrs., 2nd Brigade, 6th
Brigade, 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac to Brig. General J. Sprague
recommending Sergt. J. Van Arman of the 16th NY Vols for a
commission.
Gen. Wright's message reads... "Hqrs. 1st Div. 6th Corps, June 19,
1863... I am not personally acquainted with the merits of Sergt J.H.
Van Arman, but from the representations of Brig. Genl. Bartlett, in
whose brigade he has served, I have no hesitation in recommending
him for a commission in the Volunteer forces from the State of
New York... H.G. Wright, Brig. Gen. Comdg."
Gen. Sedgwick's message reads... "I fully endorse the recommendations
of Brig. General Bartlett and think Sergeant Van Arman would make a
competent officer...John Sedgwick, Major General"
Conservation framed with portraits of all three generals. Also framed
so both sides can be seen.
